The President of the Rotary Club of Penryn finalises his year of office by presenting a cheque for £300 to Dave Nichol of Falmouth RNLI Station on Wednesday 21st June. Half the money was raised from a raffle on his Presidents Night Dinner and the remainder from part of the funds raised from a Concert at Falmouth Methodist Church. The Rotary Club of Penryn – President’s Night
The 2006 President’s Night of the Rotary Club of Penryn, was held recently at the Falmouth Beach Resort Hotel.
A special feature of this year’s meal was the provision of wine by the late Tom Moore, who was a founder member and Past President of the Penryn Club. In his will he directed that £1000.00 should be given to the club, in his memory. It was his specific instruction that this should be used, not for charitable purposes as most of the proceeds of his estate were going to charity, but for the benefit of members of the club. It was most appropriate that Tom should be remembered in this way and glasses were raised in his name, which would have given him much pleasure.
After the meal, The Loyal Toast was given by president George Abbott, and the usual run of toasts followed.
The District Governor John Grindle, who was accompanied by his wife Joyce, proposed the toast to The Rotary Club of Penryn, and an amusing response on behalf of the club was given by Rotarian Eddie Fern.
President George then gave the toast to the Ladies, Guests and Visitors, with the response as usual from the President of the Inner Wheel Club of Penryn, who happened on this occasion to be the president’ wife, Mrs Peggy Abbott.
The toast list was wound up by the President of The Rotary Club of Falmouth, Tony Robertson, who toasted Rotary International.
Then followed the “surprise” entertainment, by the club, in honour of the president. This has now become traditional, and involves most members in the singing of songs gently lampooning the president, and wearing the most outlandish “uniform” appropriate for the individual concerned. As President George had in his youth been an enthusiastic goalkeeper, the England shirts were most apt in more ways than one!
Next in this club entertainment was a parody of the Two Ronnies, in a skit performed by Rotarians Frank Dew, and Eddie Fern, in the same lighthearted manner of the preceding item.
Finally, more professional entertainment was provided by Zena and The Jazz Warriors, and dancing continued to the end of the day.

Charity Concert
On Saturday 27th May we were pleased to present a Charity Concert featuring The Goonvrea Singers and the Nankersey Male Voice Choir together with Cornel Hrisca Munn.
For those of you who have not heard of Cornel his story is one of personal courage and perseverance. Briefly, he was born in 1991 in Romania with no lower arms and one seriously deformed leg, the doctors took him from his parents and put him in an orphanage saying he would probably die in a few days.
He came to the attention of aid workers Ken and & Doreen Munn who were able, in 1993, to bring him to the UK for treatment on his leg which was eventually amputated. With the permission of his natural parents he was adopted by Ken and Doreen in 1994 and was fitted with an artificial leg, four weeks later he was walking! In 1995 he was fitted with an artificial arm but this was too heavy and restricted his activities.
He has since raised many thousands of pounds to help others and in March 2004 was awarded the Pride of Britain Child of Courage Award for his fund raising efforts. In April 2004 Worcester County Council awarded him their citizenship award and in September 2004 he was presented with the Douglas Bader award for inspiration to others.

An excellent evening of 10 Pin Bowling with Falmouth Rotary Club. David and Ann from the Falmouth Club won the prizes for the most points with 254 and 209 points. Penryn members are still in need of some training to bring them up to a satisfactory standard. Terry needs more work on his directional deficiency to ensure that the pins get knocked down and not the spectators. Richard need to practice the art of remaining on his feet - its the ball thats supposed to go down alley not himself !!
More practice needed gents ??
